Brownell, Charles E.

Charles, known to all as “Ted”, was born April 26, 1930, in Batavia, NY, to Clifford and Katherine (Lynch) Brownell. He was a devout Catholic and long-time parishioner of St. Mary’s Church and later St. Joseph’s Parish in Batavia. After graduating from LeRoy Central High School, Ted served as a cook in the U.S. Army. He loved to share stories of the great experiences he had in Germany during his time in the service. On August 1, 1959, he married the former Sonja Diane Bradbury at St. Peter’s Church in LeRoy. Ted began his long career in the retail business at A&P Supermarket, where he met his beautiful wife of 57 years. He worked at several retail businesses throughout his life; and after retiring as Manager of Fay’s Drug Store in Batavia, he enjoyed many years relaxing on the golf course with family and friends. Post-retirement, Ted took great pride in being groundskeeper with his lifetime friend, Joe, at Machpelah Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest. He spent most of his weekends and vacations camping with his family – Letchworth State Park was one of his favorite spots, among many others throughout New York State. Ted was an avid New York Yankees fan and enjoyed watching sports on TV and working around the house in his yard. Anyone who knew him, knows Ted was a strong, hard-working man, dedicated to his family, quick-witted to friends, helpful to neighbors and will be sadly missed by all. He did his best to hold true to his favorite saying - “I’m not going!” but we all know “Ted-Ted” missed “So-So” too much to stay …

Charles is survived by his two sons, Mark (Denise) Brownell of Oakfield, Matthew Brownell (Laurisa McAllister) of Byron, and two daughters, Melessa (Shawn) Witkowski of Mount Morris and Molly (Jerry) Condello of Batavia; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and his sister, Arlene (Robert) Anderson of Minnesota, along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Sonja D. Brownell (Bradbury) December 2016, and his two brothers, Donald (Nancy) Brownell and Kenneth (Hazel) Brownell.

Friends and Family may call Thursday, August 17, 2017 from 4-7 P.M. at the Cameron Brady & Steuber Funeral Home, 111 Wolcott Street, LeRoy. His Rite of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10:00 A.M. at Our of Mercy Parish, St. Peter's Church, 44 Lake St., LeRoy, with interment to follow in Machpelah In Lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 25 Circle Street, Suite 102, Rochester, NY 14607.
